LACHINE SENIOR CITIZEN'S INC., better known as The Teapot, is a community center for people who are fifty years of age and over (50+). The center is located on the lower level of a municipal building known as La Maison du Brasseur, one of the treasured historic properties on Lachine's waterfront. The Teapot is grateful to the borough of Lachine (Montreal) for the use of these superb premises. Besides being a place where individuals meet to socialize, The Teapot provides a range of recreational, cultural and educational activities for its members. The Teapot is also a fully bilingual organization, a reflection of its diverse membership and the unique community that it serves.
One of The Teapot's primary aims is to create an environment where its members can thrive, explore their own interests and further develop their skills and abilities. The center is in fact a meeting point for people of various linguistic, ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds. It is hoped that our members will be inspired to broaden their horizons while, in turn stimulating their peers to do the same. More particularly, The Teapot provides its members with an opportunity to communicate with, and learn from others who are facing the same issues, problems and challenges. A sharing of ideas, knowledge, experiences and wisdom is what we continue to promote.
This "sharing" occurs in various settings: group discussions, information sessions, educational activities and often during a game of cards or over a cup of tea and a couple of jokes. The key to such interaction is the friendly and casual atmosphere in which all The Teapot activities take place. A renewed desire to learn, experience, and help others to do the same are things The Teapot aims to foster in its members. New friendships are bound to develop along the way as well.
In addition to the in-center programs, the Teapot reaches out to the community by providing a Home Support Program for less mobile individuals. The center itself is open five days a week and now boasts a membership of almost 700. However, its beginnings were rather modest.
